Collection Oldambt: Tangible Stories from the Region

The Power of Collaboration and Innovation
Under the working title Graan (Grain) Republic 2.0, the municipality of Oldambt is committed to enhancing prosperity in the region. By bundling existing and new initiatives, the project aims to create greater impact through focus and synergy. Agriculture, heritage, tourism, education, the labor market, and innovation are the focal points of this ambitious program. Through so-called field labs, local stakeholders collaborate to develop new products, ideas, and connections that contribute to a sustainable future for Oldambt.

The Birth of Collection Oldambt
At the heart of this initiative is Collection Oldambt: a unique collaboration between four designers and the field labs. These designers, preferably from the region, create products that bring Oldambt’s rich stories to life. From functional items like clothing, tableware, and small furniture, the collection radiates pride in the region while prioritizing sustainability.

Materials and inspiration are sourced directly from the area. Restored farmhouses provide reusable materials (Farmhouses field lab), regional fibers are given new life (To the Core field lab), food production residuals are repurposed (Food for Innovation field lab), and stories collected from the community serve as a unique resource (Ode to Oldambt field lab).

From Concept to Product
In collaboration with House of Design, target audiences and production opportunities are explored. Designers develop five promising ideas per field lab into prototypes, tested for functionality, sustainability, and market potential as souvenirs or corporate gifts. In the final phase, designers guide their creations to production, where local craftspeople produce small series with guaranteed orders. This stimulates the local economy and strengthens regional cooperation.

Engaging the Community through Education
The project also involves students and apprentices. Acting as masters and apprentices, designers mentor them, teaching the craft and sharing insights into the creative process. In doing so, Collection Oldambt not only benefits today’s community but also nurtures the artisans of the future.

A Future Full of Stories
The Collection Oldambt will be unveiled in a special exhibition at the Museum Oldambt Landscape and Agriculture. This collection lays the foundation for small-scale production lines and paves the way for larger projects. It is a story of innovation, collaboration, and pride, told through the language of craftsmanship and design.
