BBoBB – Building Based on Biobased
BBoBB is an interregional collaboration project within the North Sea region in the field of biobased (re)construction.
We believe that the transition to a circular economy is an important means of working on the climate challenge with the prospect of new circular business models. The transition from traditional to biobased building materials offers a unique opportunity to contribute to this.
Taking steps together in the biobased value chains
The pressure on the construction sector and its footprint is increasing. No less than 11% of global greenhouse gas emissions come from construction. And the production of building materials in particular has a major share in this. Fortunately, there are now many natural alternatives to traditional building materials. Think of crops such as flax, cattail, elephant grass, wool, straw and hemp.
The use of these materials in construction offers advantages for various tasks.
✔ New revenue models for farmers
✔ A positive contribution to a healthier living environment
✔ A sustainable solution for the construction sector through CO2 storage
With multiple projects and initiatives, we want to bring all parties within the biobased chains together. We want to offer perspective and take action together from a necessity towards a circular economy.
We do not only want to do this regionally, but also at an international level. By learning from each other, we can take steps. With the European project BBoBB, we focus with 16 partners from Belgium, Denmark, Germany, France and the Netherlands on developing and strengthening value chains for biobased construction. From farmers to processors to builders.
Developing, strengthening and scaling up
In 5 regional pilots, we are working on an international approach to tackle obstacles in the chains. We do this on the basis of three work packages:
Strengthening government and policy to scale up the biobased value chains;
Setting up pilots of biobased value chains in the North Sea region;
Design, awareness and involving industrial designers, architects and new clients.
Within these work packages, we work together to develop, strengthen and scale up the biobased value chains in the North Sea region. The structure of the activities and the composition of the partners ensure that all parties in the chain can be brought together. The international collaboration and exchange of knowledge offers a leap in scale to create both economic and ecological impact with the application of biobased materials.
With BBoBB we show that it is possible!
